Childhood
Harry was born Lamar, Missouri. His parents were John and Margaret Truman. He had a brother John Vivian and a sister Mary Margaret. His family moved to Independence Mo, where he attended school. He graduated high school in 1901.
Since it was rare for boys to wear glasses Harry was picked on all the time. He often read books from the local library, over 3000 by age 15 because his mother didn't want him to play sports. She was always afraid he would get hurt and break his glasses. He also practiced the piano every day for two hours. Shortly after entering high school he had to stop because his family could no longer afford it. He started working so he could help support his family.
Early years of his life
After high school Harry moved to Kansas City where he made a living for himself and to support his family. He worked in the mailroom for a local news paper, as a time keeper for a railroad construction company and he also worked at the bank as a clerk.
Shortly after his father lost all his money, he called Harry and his brother to come work on the farm for him, that he inherited from his mother in law. Harry worked side by side with his father for the next decade. He however knew that he wasn't much of a farmer but in fact a banker, but his father didn't give him much of a choice.
Harry later on joined the National Guard to get away from the farm and it gave him masculine companionship. He spent the next six years doing that and managed to make some friends. While he was in the National Guard he was having encounters with Bess Wallace. However, Bess declined his proposal to her but their romance continued going on.
Truman's father died in 1914 which caused Harry to have so much heartache. John Trumans passing; however, helped Harry to escape the farm life which he hated. The next few years he made his living by being an owner and an operator for a small mining company and a partner in an oil industry.
A Military career and Marriage
The military life suited Truman, in fact he was so great at it he arose to become the captain. He also trained his misbehaved unit to be top notch unit, that was later sent to France. Truman and his men saw their first action in Vosges Mountains in August 1918, then in Argonnes campaign in October 1918 as the last engagement of the war.
Trumans services in World War I had left a huge impact in his life. His great leadership gave him confidence and his men trusted him and his decisions. His right hand man Eddie Jacobson became his business partner in the early 1920s. They opened a store together that sold mens clothing and accessories. They took out many loans to make this possible and after a while the business was quite successful.
Before departing for training in 1917, Bess confronted him about getting married. He however, told her she should wait for his return since there was no way of knowing what would happen to him while he was away. He did in fact write her a letter which told her that he was crazy about her. On June 28th 1919 after his return home a month later Harry and Bess married in Independence. Four years later they had their only child Mary Margaret.
